5 Stars Problem solved.
Harrington is certainly the man when it comes to strategic hold ‘em. His first two books for tournament were great. And I love poker problems and discussion so this was the book for me. The set up for each problem was good and easy to follow. I did all the problems and graded myself and documented the amswers in the back of the book and I did slightly worse than I anticipated. If we are honest, that is probably the result most people have. Quite a few of the problems were fair with good choices to choose from. But, other problems were treated differently with some sideways logic involved. Sometimes, I wasn’t thinking in the same way as the author on some of the problems. It was as if I had to think like the person we were playing along with to get the best score on an answer. But, overall I greatly enjoyed going through all the problems and seeing how well I stacked up. If you are the kind of person who enjoys going through poker hands, this is the book for you. Lots to learn, easy to read. The best part of the book is taking your answers and finding out where your weaknesses are. Good cross reference and easy to go back through the problems and see where you need to improve. Well thought out workbook. Each problem only takes a few minutes or less and it is great to take the book with you when you are out and about and you find yourself with a few extra minutes waiting around for something or someone. And I’ll see you at the final table.
5 Stars The greatest books ever written!
A must have! The mild-mannered Harrington shows you how to play poker the way it should be played. You learn the fundamentals and learn to put names on all those plays you did but didnt know what they were called…..
Purchased Volume 1 at barnes and noble and the other two here.

Ok I’ll be the first to agree that the first 2 books written by Harrington are the best books in teaching a person how to play No-Limit Hold’em. The workbook however does nothing to enhance a player’s poker skills. If you have been playing poker for over 3 years and have played live poker, and watched poker broadcast on your LCD, you don’t need to read this book.
Most of the poker problems Harrington gives you to solve were telecast on TV.
Strategically Harrington made mistakes in this book….
He doesn’t teach you how to push a player off a hand when it’s so obvious the player has NOTHING!!!! He loves giving free cards after the flop.
This book would only help if a player who is just learning how to play No-Limit Hold’em purchases all 3 books at the same time and reads them cover to cover before embarking into the world of live poker (casino). Otherwise as I stated before if you have at least 3 years of live poker experience…don’t bother it won’t teach you anything or improve your game in any way.
4 Stars A nice finale, but you don’t absolutely need it.
There are poker books that you need and poker books that are nice to have. Volumes I and II are in the need category. This book? Well, it’s nice to have. The reason for this is that the book is essentially a way to get a more specific and real life look at the things that Harrington talks about in the first two volumes. As a result, you could ostensibly never purchase this book and not miss anything in terms of new information.
What actually comprises the new information in this book is actually the application of the concepts like the use of M in making decisions or applying structure hand analysis. Additionally, his examples of real life hands between top poker players offers some incredible insights into the minds of great poker players, and as a side benefit really makes watching TV poker afterwards that much more fun.
Additionally, the workbook style is a pretty useful structure to help solidify all the previous ideas into a cohesive form. After all the information that Harrington delivers in the first two volumes, a third book to help bring it all home might be a necessity. Still, though, if you had only $25 to buy a book to round out your poker library, and you already had the first two, I might suggest a few alternatives that would provide a few more new insights.
That being said, if it is useful to you to see the way that Harrington’s brilliant poker principles are put into practice in real world situations, with some of the best poker players in the world at the table to serve as examples (let’s be honest, that sounds pretty good)…well, again, it’s a nice book to have.
4 Stars If Everyone is reading it, what’s the use?
This is a useful book that will help you to analyze tough decisions and think ahead to hopefully avoid the tough decisions. Read the book, improve your game but don’t count on making a lot of money… Breaking even is probably what you should expect online if you score above 400 on the questions.
